When times are challenging it is only natural that you feel vulnerable, worried and uncertain on how to navigate these tough times.
So here are some tips on how to keep going through hard times.
First, be aware of your emotions.
Pay attention to whatever you are feeling.
Do not dismiss your feelings.
Go inside and check your internal thermometer; we all have an internal thermometer that measures the temperature of our emotions.
This thermometer is located in the part of your body where you feel your emotions; perhaps in your stomach or in your chest, wherever you feel your
emotions; check your thermometer and notice if the temperature is above your normal.
Second, allow yourself to feel whatever it is that you are feeling when your emotional temperature is above your normal.
Do not stop yourself from feeling these emotions, because when you feel them, when you are aware of them only then you can take action.
Third, once you are aware of a particular emotion, once you feel it, once you notice that its temperature is above your normal, ask yourself
“What do I want to feel instead?”
It’s important to notice that you ask the question in the present tense and using I instead of you. This way you are guiding your mind to focus on
yourself in the now moment.
Fourth, replace any negative emotion with a positive one.
For example, if you are feeling anger replace it with kindness if you are feeling stressed
with calm, if it is fear replace it with courage.
Perhaps you are wondering how you replace an emotion.
The process is very simple: if you want to replace fear with kindness just remember an act of kindness that you bestowed upon someone or you were the recipient of, remember how it felt and bring this feeling to the now moment.
Fill your whole body with kindness or any positive emotion you want to feel instead of the negative.
Fifth, get connected.
Get in touch with family, friends, or neighbours.
Finally, this week’s challenge, do not put on a brave face.
Allow yourself to feel any negative emotion so you can take action and replace it whenever necessary.
