You know very well how to keep your body healthy. You may have a routine set up and perhaps you may even have habits to keep your body in shipshape; perhaps you exercise regularly, you eat healthy foods and you drink plenty of water.

Now, I wonder if you do the same regarding your mental health.

Keeping your mental health healthy is exactly the same as keeping your body healthy. You set up a routine.

However, if you are not sure how to set up a mental health routine, I will give you four tips that can be used as a starting point.

  • Choose a relaxation technique that best suits you for instance meditation or mindfulness or any other one that you prefer.
  • Once you choose your technique, do it regularly and consistently, otherwise, it is not a routine.
  • Your routine has to be realistic to your lifestyle. If you choose a routine that you know you cannot fit in your daily life, you won’t be able to keep up with it and you’ll give it up altogether. In other others, if you cannot meditate an hour every day perhaps you can do it for half an hour three times a week. Whichever is best for you.
  • Make your routine simple. You have everything you need in your home to do your routine. You don’t need anything special. You can do it sitting or lying down, anywhere in your home. You can do it in silence or by listening to music. And you don’t need to create any atmosphere because the atmosphere comes from within.

The trick to stick to your routine is to be aware of the traps that you may create to sabotage said routine.

The number one trap is time; when you think you don’t have time to do it. That is why the routine needs to fit in your lifestyle.

The number two trap is when you think you don’t know how to do it. Not knowing is an excuse. You know how relax. You may not be used to doing it on a regular basis, but your mind knows how to relax.

So, start small. Instead of doing it for an hour do it for ten minutes and then add on the minutes accordingly.

This is my routine just as an example.

I sit with myself for five minutes every morning. My eyes are open and my body is relaxed. Even though my eyes are open I’m not looking at anything specific; they are just open. My mind is totally relaxed as well. I have no focus on anything in particular. My thoughts come in and out of my awareness.

Let’s take action right now.

Set up your routine.

If you like the way I do mine, try it. If not choose one that fits your lifestyle.

If at this very moment you have fallen into any of the two traps, time and lack of knowledge, then let’s have a chat.
