Learning from negative experiences

It may sound impossible, but it is not. All you need to do is to shift your focus to positive learning instead of focussing only on the negative that you had experienced.

The only way of shifting your focus is by revisiting the negative experience.

By this point, I can hear you screaming at me:

“Why on earth would I want to revisit something negative.”

And my answer to you would be:

“For four equally important reasons.”

  1. You can only get the positive learnings when you revisit the negative experience, because as you have gone through this experience once it will allow you to focus on the learnings this time round.

  2. It is the only way to change your now moment. By getting the positive learnings from a past experience, you’ll be able to change any now moment when you find yourself dealing with a similar experience. In other words, you’ll know what to do and how to do things differently.

  3. It is the only way of breaking negative behavioural patterns. When you ignore a negative experience, when you don’t get the positive learnings from that experience you may repeat the same negative behavioural patterns over and over again, because you are none the wiser. You are unable to shift the focus from negative to a positive resource.

  4. When you revisit a negative experience coming from a positive perspective, you eliminate blame. Therefore, there is no need to blame yourself or others.

So, let’s take action right now.

Think about a negative experience.

Have the image of the experience very clear in your mind eyes.

Step out of the image and put it on the wall like you would do with a picture.

Look at the image as if you are looking at a picture from an external perspective because you are not in the picture.

Then, as you are not associated with the picture ask yourself what positive learnings you can get from this experience. The positive learnings will be the resources if or when you need them in the future.

And last but no less important, trust in the answers and trust in yourself that you will know what to do when you are faced with a similar situation.
