A few days ago I was visiting Texas with my American family.
There’s a building in San Antonio, that has historical importance for Texas and the USA. It is the Alamo.
In 1836, Texan soldiers defended the Alamo against the Mexican army for 13 days.
The decision they made then was to defend the Alamo at any cost.
Unfortunately, as they were outgunned and outnumbered, they all paid with their lives.
If you ask people “What does courage mean?”, they may think of similar major deeds.
However, personally, I don’t think that courage can be defined and limited only by specific acts of bravery, like during a conflict or tragedy.
In my opinion, it takes courage to
- open your eyes every day,
- choose your career,
- change your mind when the career you chose did not live up to your expectations,
- change when your circumstances change,
- set up your goals and achieve them,
- ask for help when you need it.
It also takes courage to say “No”, especially when there is a lot of pressure for you to say “Yes”.
Likewise, it takes a lot of courage to say “Yes” when there is a lot of pressure for you to say “No”.
My answer to “What does courage mean?” in everyday life is that it takes courage to
- choose family over career,
- or career over family, or even to choose to balance both, family and career,
- stand your ground, to be your true self,
- set up boundaries,
- be vulnerable,
- show your humanity.
Most of all it takes courage to live the life you choose.
